How to become an IPS officer

To become an IPS (Indian Police Service) officer, you must first pass the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. Here are the steps to become an IPS officer:

1.      Eligibility: You must be a citizen of India and have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university or institution.

Age: The candidate must be between 21-32 years of age as of 1st August of the exam year. There are age relaxations available for candidates belonging to certain categories such as SC, ST, OBC, ex-servicemen, and others.

Educational Qualification: The candidate must hold a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Candidates who are in their final year of graduation can also apply, but they must provide proof of completion of their degree before the interview stage.

Physical Fitness: Candidates must meet certain physical fitness standards, such as height and chest measurements, vision requirements, and general health and fitness standards.

Number of attempts: There are restrictions on the number of attempts that a candidate can make to clear the exam, depending on the category to which they belong.

It is important to note that these eligibility criteria are subject to change, and candidates should refer to the official notification issued by the UPSC for the latest updates and details.

2.      Apply for the CSE: The CSE is held annually, and you can apply for the exam through the UPSC website. The application process includes submitting an online application, paying the application fee, and submitting required documents.

3.      Prepare for the exam: The CSE is a competitive exam that tests candidates' knowledge of a wide range of topics, including general studies, aptitude, and a specific subject of your choice. There are numerous books and coaching centers available to help you prepare for the exam.

4.      Clear the preliminary exam: The CSE has three stages, with the first being the preliminary exam. This exam consists of two papers of multiple-choice questions, and you must clear this stage to move on to the next stage.

5.      Clear the main exam: The main exam is a written exam that tests your knowledge of various subjects. This stage consists of nine papers, including one language paper and two optional subject papers.

6.      Clear the interview: The final stage is an interview conducted by the UPSC. The interview assesses your personality, leadership skills, and other qualities necessary for an IPS officer.

7.      Training: After clearing the interview, you will undergo training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.

Once you successfully complete the training, you will be appointed as an IPS officer and posted to a state or union territory.
