๐Ÿซ National Rocky Road Day – 2 nd June (US) Chocolate, marshmallow, and nuts — a rocky road to deliciousness! 2nd June National Rocky Road Day rocky road ice cream marshmallow chocolate almond Every year on 2 nd June , the United States celebrates National Rocky Road Day — a food holiday dedicated to the iconic ice cream flavor: chocolate ice cream with marshmallows and nuts (usually almonds or walnuts). Rocky Road is one of the oldest ice cream flavors, invented during the Great Depression to bring a little sweetness to hard times. The origins of this unofficial holiday are unclear (likely a dairy industry promotion from the 1990s). But the flavor's popularity has never faded — it remains a classic favorite. ๐Ÿซ History of Rocky Road Ice Cream ๐Ÿ“… 1929 — Invented by William Dreyer (Dreyer's Ice Cream) in Oakland, California. ๐Ÿ“‰ Great Depression — Named "Rocky Road" to give pe...

๐ŸŒŒ 2I/Borisov: The Interstellar Comet

In August 2019, amateur astronomer Gennadiy Borisov in Crimea made history by discovering 2I/Borisov—the first confirmed interstellar comet to visit our Solar System. Unlike สปOumuamua, whose mysterious nature left scientists puzzled, Borisov behaved much more like a traditional comet, but with one extraordinary twist: it came from another star system.

☄️ Key Facts About 2I/Borisov

  • Type: A comet (with a visible coma and tail).

  • Size: Estimated nucleus diameter of ~0.5–1 km.

  • Speed: Entered the Solar System at ~175,000 km/h, on a hyperbolic trajectory, ensuring it won’t return.

  • Appearance: Exhibited a classic cometary coma (cloud of gas and dust) and a long tail.

  • Closest Approach: Passed near the Sun in December 2019, at a distance of ~2 AU (twice Earth’s distance from the Sun).

๐Ÿ”ฌ Why Borisov Excited Scientists

  1. First True Interstellar Comet – Unlike สปOumuamua, which lacked comet-like activity, Borisov had a clear gas and dust tail, confirming it was icy in nature.

  2. Composition – Observations revealed it had carbon monoxide and water ice in abundance, suggesting it formed in a cold region around another star.

  3. Comparison to Solar System Comets – Interestingly, its chemistry was very similar to comets in our own Solar System, proving that planetary systems across the galaxy may form in similar ways.

๐ŸŒ  What Makes 2I/Borisov Special?

  • It gave astronomers a “real sample” of material from another planetary system.

  • Unlike the mysterious สปOumuamua, Borisov looked and acted like a comet, making it easier to study.

  • Its tail stretched for hundreds of thousands of kilometers, providing insights into how interstellar objects carry and release volatile materials.

๐ŸŒ Lessons from an Interstellar Visitor

Borisov’s journey reminds us that our Solar System isn’t isolated. Pieces of other worlds pass through, carrying stories of their origins. By studying these rare travelers, scientists hope to:

  • Learn how planets and comets form across the galaxy.

  • Compare chemistry between star systems.

  • Explore the possibility of organic molecules traveling interstellar distances—which connects to the mystery of life’s cosmic origins.

✨ A Glimpse Beyond Our Stars

While สปOumuamua left us with questions, 2I/Borisov gave answers—showing that icy comets from alien systems can survive the vastness of interstellar space and still reveal their secrets. Together, these two interstellar visitors mark the beginning of a new era in astronomy: the study of cosmic messengers from beyond the Solar System.

The day encourages fans to carry a towel with them, as a nod to one of the most famous passages in the book: "A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have." Towel Day was first organized in 2001, just two weeks after Douglas Adams' death, by fans who wanted a fitting, quirky, and very Adams-esque way to honor his memory. It has since become an annual international celebration of Adams' wit, wisdom, and unique vision of the universe. ๐Ÿงบ The Towel: Why Is It So Important? From The Hitchhiker's Gu...
