A simple bowl of pears becomes a subject of depth, texture, and light. The composition reflects a timeless still-life tradition, where ordinary forms are transformed into visual poetry. 🖌️ Artistic Process The journey began with a loose sketch to establish composition and balance. With acrylics, layering was approached strategically — starting with thin underpainting and gradually building opacity and highlights. Fast-drying acrylic allowed controlled detailing, especially in defining form, edges, and reflections. 🧭 Why This Day Matters

Every year, the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists reminds the world of a grave truth: journalists are being threatened, harassed, and even killed—simply for doing their job.

This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2013 in response to the assassination of two French journalists in Mali. Since then, it has become a global call to action: protect journalists, uphold freedom of speech, and ensure that crimes against the press never go unpunished.

🎯 What Is “Impunity”?

Impunity means lack of accountability or failure to bring perpetrators to justice. According to UNESCO:

📉 Over 70% of crimes committed against journalists go unpunished.

This silence encourages more violence, censorship, and a breakdown of democracy.

🌍 Theme for 2025 (Expected Focus)

While the official 2025 theme is yet to be formally declared by the UN, ongoing discussions focus on:

This highlights the need to reinforce legal frameworks, digital protections, and support networks for those reporting under extreme risk.

From war reporters in conflict zones to whistleblowers covering corruption, journalists act as guardians of truth. Some have paid with their lives:

  • Jamal Khashoggi – brutally killed in 2018 for criticizing power.

  • Daphne Caruana Galizia – murdered in 2017 for exposing corruption in Malta.

  • Shireen Abu Akleh – veteran Palestinian-American journalist shot during a raid in 2022.

This day honors their memory—and demands that justice is not delayed nor denied.
