⭐ Declaration of the Báb – 23rd May (Baháʼí Holy Day)
"The dawn of a new day" — commemorating the birth of the Baháʼí Faith
On the evening of 22nd May into 23rd May, Baháʼís around the world celebrate one of their holiest days — the Declaration of the Báb. This day marks the anniversary of when a young merchant from Shiraz, Persia (modern-day Iran), known as the Báb (meaning "the Gate" in Arabic), declared His mission as a divine Messenger on the evening of 22 May 1844 (corresponding to the 5th of Jamádíyu’l-Avval, 1260 AH in the Islamic calendar).
The Declaration of the Báb is considered the beginning of the Baháʼí Faith and is one of the nine Baháʼí holy days on which work and school are suspended. It is observed from sunset on May 22 to sunset on May 23 each year.
🕯️ Who Was the Báb?
Siyyid ʿAlí-Muhammad (1819–1850) — Known as the Báb ("the Gate").
- 📅 Born — October 20, 1819, in Shiraz, Persia (Iran).
- 📜 Lineage — A descendant of the Prophet Muhammad through Imam Husayn (making Him a Sayyid).
- 💼 Occupation — A merchant (like His ancestor, the Prophet Muhammad).
- 📖 Mission — The Báb declared that He was the promised Qá'im (Mahdi) of Islam — the one who would usher in a new age. He also announced that He was preparing the way for "Him Whom God shall make manifest" — a greater Messenger soon to come (Baháʼu'lláh).
- ✍️ Writings — The Báb revealed thousands of verses, including the Qayyúmu'l-Asmá' (commentary on the Surah of Joseph), which was His first revelation on the night of His declaration.
⭐ The Night of Declaration: 22 May 1844
The story of the Declaration is sacred in Baháʼí history:
- 🏠 The setting — A young man named Mullá Husayn, a devout Muslim searching for the promised Qá'im, traveled to Shiraz after hearing rumors of a holy figure.
- 🚪 The meeting — On the evening of May 22, 1844, Mullá Husayn was invited into the home of a young merchant, the Báb. The Báb asked him to share a glass of water and then revealed His station.
- 📜 The revelation — The Báb revealed a commentary on the Surah of Joseph (the Qayyúmu'l-Asmá') in Mullá Husayn's presence, demonstrating divine knowledge.
- ✊ First believer — Mullá Husayn instantly recognized the Báb as the promised one and became His first disciple. He was given the title "Bábu'l-Báb" (Gate of the Gate).
- 📈 The remaining Letters — Over the following months, the Báb declared His mission to 17 other seekers, who became known as the "Letters of the Living" — His first 18 disciples (including a woman, Táhirih).
📜 The Báb's Mission and Teachings
The Báb's ministry was brief but transformative (1844–1850). Key teachings include:
- 🕯️ A new Messenger — The Báb announced that He was the forerunner of a greater Messenger, "Him Whom God shall make manifest" (Baháʼu'lláh).
- ⚖️ Abrogation of Islamic law — The Báb revealed a new holy book, the Bayán, which replaced the Islamic Sharia with new laws for a new age.
- 🌍 Spiritual renewal — Emphasized the purification of the soul, the unity of all religions, and the coming age of peace and justice.
- ✍️ Numerical symbolism — The Báb attached great significance to the number 19 (19 Letters of the Living, 19 months in the Baháʼí calendar, etc.).
- 🗣️ Women's rights — The Báb elevated the status of women, granting them spiritual equality and encouraging education. His disciple Táhirih, a poet and theologian, publicly removed her veil at the Conference of Badasht — a radical act.
⚔️ Persecution and Martyrdom
The Báb's teachings spread rapidly, alarming the Persian government and the Muslim clergy. Thousands of Bábís (followers of the Báb) were imprisoned, tortured, and killed:
- 🏛️ Conference of Badasht (1848) — A gathering where the Báb's followers formally declared independence from Islamic law.
- ⚔️ Fort Tabarsi (1848–1849) — A siege in which hundreds of Bábís were massacred by government forces.
- 🕯️ Martyrdom of the Báb (9 July 1850) — The Báb was brought before a firing squad in Tabriz, Persia. He gave a final address to His disciple, and the first volley of bullets failed to kill Him (they only cut the ropes binding Him). A second regiment was summoned, and the Báb was martyred. His remains were later hidden by believers and eventually transported to the Holy Land, where they are now enshrined in the Shrine of the Báb on Mount Carmel, Haifa, Israel.
✨ The Connection to Baháʼu'lláh
The Báb explicitly announced that His mission was to prepare humanity for "Him Whom God shall make manifest" — a greater Messenger who would appear soon after. In 1863 (19 years after the Báb's declaration), Baháʼu'lláh (the "Glory of God") declared that He was that promised One. Baháʼís view the Báb and Baháʼu'lláh as successive Messengers in a single progressive revelation — similar to how John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus, or the Prophet Elijah prepared for Muhammad (in Islamic tradition).
🕯️ How Baháʼís Celebrate the Declaration of the Báb
- 🕯️ Evening gathering — The observance begins at sunset on May 22. Baháʼís gather in homes or Baháʼí centers (often called "Feast" but this is a special Holy Day, not a Nineteen Day Feast).
- 📖 Prayers and readings — Passages from the Báb's writings and the Baháʼí scriptures are read aloud, often focusing on the meaning of the Báb's mission and sacrifice.
- 🎶 Music and devotions — Some communities include devotional music, singing, or poetry.
- 🤝 Community fellowship — After the program, participants share refreshments and conversation.
- ⚙️ Suspension of work — Baháʼís do not work or attend school on this holy day (from sunset May 22 to sunset May 23).
- 🌍 Inclusive gatherings — Non-Baháʼí friends and family are warmly welcomed to observe the day.
📅 The Baháʼí Calendar and the Significance of 19
The Báb established the Badí' calendar (also known as the Baháʼí calendar).
- 📅 19 months — Each month has 19 days.
- 📆 19 days per month — Total 361 days (plus intercalary days).
- 📖 Nineteen Day Feast — The community gathering held every Baháʼí month (first day of each month).
- ⭐ 19 Letters of the Living — The Báb's first 18 disciples plus Himself.
- 🕯️ Year 1 — The Baháʼí calendar begins with the Declaration of the Báb (1844 CE = Year 1).
🌍 The Significance of the Báb for Baháʼí Faith
The Báb is revered in the Baháʼí Faith as a Manifestation of God — an independent Messenger with His own revelation. Baháʼís consider the Báb to be on the same level as Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, and Baháʼu'lláh. However, the Báb's revelation was intentionally abrogated by Baháʼu'lláh, just as the Qurʼan abrogated previous scriptures. Baháʼís do not follow the Báb's laws (which were designed for a transitional period) but honor Him as the "Gate" to Baháʼu'lláh.
🏛️ The Shrine of the Báb – A Sacred Site
The Shrine of the Báb in Haifa, Israel, is one of the most holy places for Baháʼís worldwide. Its golden dome is a landmark on Mount Carmel. The remains of the Báb were secretly preserved by His followers for decades, eventually brought to the Holy Land in 1899, and interred in a simple mausoleum. Baháʼu'lláh Himself designated the location. The current shrine complex, completed in 1953, includes the golden-domed building, terraced gardens (the Baháʼí Gardens), and administrative buildings (the Arc). The shrine is a place of pilgrimage and daily prayer.
🎨 Art & the Bábí/Baháʼí Tradition
The Baháʼí Faith has inspired calligraphy (especially of the Greatest Name), architecture (the Baháʼí Gardens, the Lotus Temple in Delhi), poetry, and visual arts. The Báb's own writings are often beautifully illuminated. Art is seen as a form of worship and service — a way to beautify the world and reflect divine attributes.
🌱 How to Observe or Learn About the Day (Even if Not Baháʼí)
- 📖 Read about the Báb — Selections from the Baháʼí writings or historical accounts (e.g., Nabil's Narrative / The Dawn-Breakers).
- 🕯️ Attend a Baháʼí gathering — Find your local Baháʼí community (often listed online) and ask if you can observe the holy day.
- 🎶 Listen to Baháʼí devotional music — Recordings of prayers and music are available online.
- 📜 Reflect on spiritual renewal — The Báb's declaration symbolizes hope, courage, and the power of one person to change the world.
- 🗣️ Share respectful awareness — Use #DeclarationOfTheBab #BahaiHolyDay #May23Bahai
- 🤝 Learn about religious diversity — Understanding other faiths builds peace and reduces prejudice.
🕯️ The Báb's Own Words
From the Qayyúmu'l-Asmá', the Báb's first revelation revealed to Mullá Husayn on the night of declaration:
"Verily, I am the Báb, the Gate of God, and the announcer of the One Who shall appear after Me, the Most Great... Purify your hearts, O people, for the Day of God has come."
🧭 A Message of Renewal
On the evening of 22 May 1844, in a modest home in Shiraz, a 24-year-old merchant changed religious history. He claimed nothing less than to be the promised one of Islam — and to be preparing the world for an even greater Messenger. His ministry lasted only six years. He was executed by firing squad at age 30. But from His brief, blazing life emerged a new world religion with over 6 million followers today. The Declaration of the Báb reminds us that revolutionary truth often arrives quietly — in a single room, to a single seeker — and from there spreads to the ends of the Earth.
