Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea
(Restoration Day)

31st July • Hawaiʻi

Honoring the Restoration of Hawaiian Sovereignty, Cultural Identity, and the Enduring Spirit of the Hawaiian People.

Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, meaning "Sovereignty Restoration Day", is observed annually on 31 July in Hawaiʻi. The day commemorates the restoration of the Hawaiian Kingdom's sovereignty by the United Kingdom in 1843, following a brief unauthorized occupation by British naval officer Lord George Paulet.

During a ceremony in Honolulu, British Admiral Richard Darton Thomas formally restored the authority of King Kamehameha III. On that occasion, the King proclaimed the famous Hawaiian motto: "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono" — commonly translated as "The life (or sovereignty) of the land is perpetuated in righteousness." Today, this phrase serves as the official motto of the State of Hawaiʻi.

Self-Respect • Inner Strength • Resilience • Personal Growth Your worth does not increase when others recognize it, nor does it disappear when they fail to see it. There comes a point in life when we must stop asking, “Do they value me?” and begin asking, “Do I value myself?” We often spend too much emotional energy seeking approval, recognition, respect and acceptance from other people. We explain ourselves, prove our intentions, demonstrate our abilities and sometimes sacrifice our own peace simply to be appreciated. But life teaches us an important truth: not everyone will understand your value—and that is okay. “Never exhaust yourself trying to prove your worth t...
