Aristotle on Politics

"The person who is not political is either an animal or a god." 

More than 2,300 years ago, the Greek philosopher Aristotle offered one of history's most profound observations about human society:

"Man is by nature a political animal."

Another popular paraphrase of his philosophy states:

"The person who is not political is either an animal or God."

Although this wording is widely quoted, Aristotle's original idea was slightly different. He argued that human beings naturally belong to communities. Anyone who lives entirely outside society must either lack the qualities that make us human—or possess complete self-sufficiency beyond ordinary human life.

🏛️ What Did Aristotle Mean?

Modern readers often misunderstand the word "political." Aristotle was not referring to political parties, elections, or ideological debates.

Instead, he believed politics represented the collective life of society—how people cooperate, create laws, seek justice, and work together for the common good.

For Aristotle, politics meant:
