🕊️ Martyrs' Day – 13th July (Jammu & Kashmir)
Remembering the Heroes of July 13, 1931
On 13th July, Jammu & Kashmir observes Martyrs' Day, a day of remembrance for the 22 Muslims who lost their lives outside the Srinagar Central Jail during the rule of Maharaja Hari Singh in 1931 [citation:8]. The day commemorates the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives in the struggle against oppression.
This observance has been a significant day in the Valley's history, marking the heroism of the Kashmiri people in their fight for justice. However, since 2020, the day has not been an official holiday following changes to the holiday calendar by the Lieutenant Governor [citation:8]. In 2025, the exclusion of July 13 and December 5 (Sheikh Abdullah's birthday) from the official list became a political flashpoint, with the National Conference expressing its disagreement [citation:8].
